Understanding Cervical Spine Magnetic Resonance Imaging (C Spine MRI)

A Cervical Spine (C-Spine) MRI is a non-invasive diagnostic scan that generates detailed, cross-sectional images of the neck region. This scan provides clear views of the cervical vertebrae (C1 to C7), spinal cord, nerve roots, muscles, and the shock-absorbing intervertebral discs in the neck.

Why is a Cervical Spine MRI Performed?

This scan is ordered to investigate chronic neck pain, stiffness, or symptoms radiating down to the shoulders, arms, and fingers (such as numbness, tingling, or weakness). It helps diagnose:

  • Herniated or Bulging Neck Discs: Discs that have shifted and are pressing on nerves.

  • Cervical Radiculopathy: Pinched nerves in the neck causing pain radiating to the arms.

  • Spinal Canal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal around the neck, potentially compressing the spinal cord.

  • Trauma and Degenerative Disease: Whiplash injuries, cervical arthritis, or wear and tear of spine joints.

Preparing for Your Cervical Spine MRI:

Safety is crucial due to the strong magnets. Remove all metallic items near your neck and head (necklaces, collar stiffeners, earrings, hairpins, and glasses). Let the technologist know about any metallic medical implants (aneurysm clips, stimulators, pacemakers, etc.) before the scan.

What to Expect During the Exam:

You will lie flat on your back on a table that slides into the scanner tunnel. A neck cradle or coil will support your neck and head. You will hear loud thumping sounds during the scan, so earplugs or music-playing headphones will be provided. The scan is completely painless, takes 30 to 45 minutes, and requires you to lie perfectly still.

FAQs

Q1. What is an MRI C Spine scan used for?
MRI C Spine is used to examine the cervical spine, including the neck vertebrae, discs, spinal cord, and surrounding soft tissues.

Q2. Why would a doctor recommend an MRI C Spine?
It may be recommended for neck pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, cervical disc problems, nerve compression, or suspected spinal cord issues.

Q3. Is MRI C Spine safe?
Yes. MRI does not use radiation and is generally safe, but patients should inform the team about implants, pacemakers, or metal inside the body.

Q4. How long does an MRI C Spine take?
An MRI C Spine usually takes around 15–30 minutes depending on the study.

Q5. Do I need to fast before an MRI C Spine?
Usually no fasting is needed unless your scan has special instructions.

Q6. Can MRI C Spine detect slipped disc or nerve compression?
Yes. It is commonly used to detect disc bulge, slipped disc, nerve compression, spinal cord changes, and other cervical spine conditions.

Q7. What should I avoid before the scan?
Avoid wearing jewelry, watches, hairpins, or any metal objects. Wear comfortable, metal-free clothing.
