Understanding an MRI of the Left Knee

An MRI of the left knee maps a single joint in fine detail using a magnetic field and radio waves, with no radiation involved. Where an X-ray shows bone alone, this scan renders the soft tissue that actually fails in most knee complaints — the menisci, the cruciate and collateral ligaments, articular cartilage, tendons and the fluid spaces around the joint.

When Is a Left Knee MRI Advised?

Your doctor will usually order this scan when symptoms are confined to the left side and an X-ray has not explained them. Typical referrals include:

  • Twisting and sports injuries: ACL, PCL or collateral ligament damage after a fall, tackle or sudden pivot on the left leg.

  • Meniscal and cartilage tears: catching, locking or the left knee giving way under load.

  • Pain that outlasts the injury: continued swelling or discomfort weeks after a knock, with a normal X-ray.

  • Surgical planning: mapping the extent of damage before arthroscopy or ligament reconstruction on that side.

What the Study Covers

This is a single-joint study — the sequences are acquired over the left knee only. If the right knee is also symptomatic, it needs its own scan, or a bilateral study covering both joints in one sitting.

Preparing for Your Left Knee MRI

Wear loose clothing free of zips, hooks and metal fasteners. Leave jewellery, watches, hairpins and cards with magnetic strips outside the scan room. Tell the technologist beforehand about any pacemaker, aneurysm clip, cochlear implant, metallic fragment or orthopaedic hardware, and about pregnancy.

Inside the Scanner

You lie on the table and a dedicated knee coil is positioned around the left knee. Only the lower half of your body enters the bore, so the scan is comfortable for most people who find full-body MRI difficult. The machine produces rhythmic knocking sounds and earplugs are provided. Expect roughly 20 to 30 minutes, during which the leg must stay still.

No fasting is needed for a plain knee MRI. Simply arrive in metal-free clothing unless the centre has given you specific instructions.

Q7. Can it tell an old injury from a new one?
Yes. Bone marrow oedema and fluid signal point to a recent injury, while scarring and cartilage thinning indicate long-standing damage.
