Understanding Lumbar Spine Magnetic Resonance Imaging (LS Spine MRI)
An LS Spine MRI is a non-invasive imaging test that produces detailed, high-resolution cross-sectional pictures of the lumbar spine (lower back). This includes the lumbar vertebrae, spinal cord, spinal nerves, and the intervertebral discs separating the bones.
Why is a Lumbar Spine MRI Performed?
An LS Spine MRI is recommended for patients experiencing chronic lower back pain, sciatica (radiating leg pain), numbness, or weakness in the legs and feet. It is highly effective for evaluating:
Disc Disorders: Herniated, bulging, slipped, or degenerated intervertebral discs.
Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
Spondylolisthesis: Misalignment or slippage of one vertebra over another.
Tumors and Infections: Abnormal lesions, tumors on the spine, or spinal infections like osteomyelitis.
Preparing for Your LS Spine MRI:
As with all MRIs, metal must be avoided due to the strong magnetic field. You should wear loose, metal-free clothing or change into a gown. Remove all jewelry, keys, belts, and items containing zippers or snaps. If you have a pacemaker, joint replacement implants, or surgical clips, discuss them with your doctor beforehand.
What to Expect During the Exam:
You will lie on a padded table that slides into the center of the MRI machine. Padded supports may be placed under your knees to reduce strain on your lower back. The technologist will monitor you from the next room. The machine makes rhythmic knocking noises, and you will receive hearing protection. The scan is painless and takes about 30 to 40 minutes, during which you must remain still.
Q1. What is an MRI LS Spine scan used for?
MRI LS Spine is used to examine the lumbar spine and sacral region, including the lower back vertebrae, discs, nerves, and spinal canal.
Q2. Why is MRI LS Spine advised?
It is commonly advised for low back pain, sciatica, slipped disc, leg pain, numbness, weakness, or suspected nerve compression.
Q3. Does MRI LS Spine use radiation?
No. MRI does not use radiation.
Q4. How long does MRI LS Spine take?
An MRI LS Spine usually takes around 15–30 minutes depending on the study.
Q5. Can MRI LS Spine detect slipped disc?
Yes. It is one of the most common scans used to detect disc bulge, herniation, nerve root compression, and other lower back problems.
Q6. Do I need any preparation before MRI LS Spine?
Usually no major preparation is needed. Remove all metal items and wear comfortable, metal-free clothing.
An MRI of the lumbar spine images the lower back and the nerves that run down to the legs. It is advised if:
