MRI of the Right Knee — What It Shows
An MRI of the right knee produces cross-sectional images of one joint without radiation, using a strong magnetic field and radio waves. For most people the right leg is the lead and weight-bearing side, so it tends to show wear, cartilage thinning and overuse changes earlier than the left — patterns that an X-ray cannot resolve.
Common Reasons Your Doctor May Order It
Referrals for a right knee MRI usually fall into four groups:
Long-standing pain and stiffness: early osteoarthritis, cartilage thinning or bone marrow oedema in the right joint.
Instability: a right knee that buckles or gives way, suggesting cruciate ligament laxity or a tear.
Swelling that keeps coming back: joint effusion, synovitis, bursitis or a Baker’s cyst behind the right knee.
Follow-up: checking healing after arthroscopy, meniscal repair or ligament reconstruction on that side.
Right Knee Only
The sequences are acquired over the right joint alone. A symptomatic left knee needs a separate study, or book the bilateral scan so the radiologist can report both knees together.
Before You Come In
Come in comfortable clothes with no metal fastenings, and leave jewellery, hairpins, watches and magnetic-strip cards outside the scan room. Declare any pacemaker, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, metallic fragment, implanted device or pregnancy at check-in — screening is what keeps MRI safe.
During the Scan
A knee coil is fitted around the right knee and the table moves so that only your lower body sits inside the bore. The scanner is loud in bursts; earplugs or headphones are provided. Plan for about 20 to 30 minutes of still, painless scanning.
Q1. What does an MRI Knee - Right Joint scan look at?
The cartilage, menisci, ligaments, tendons and bone of the right knee, along with the fluid spaces around the joint.
Q2. Why would my doctor advise an MRI of the right knee?
Usually for right knee pain that has not settled, recurring swelling, a joint that gives way, or to review healing after an injury or surgery on that side.
Q3. Will the report cover my left knee too?
No — this study is limited to the right knee. Choose the bilateral knee MRI if you want both joints reported.
Q4. How long will I be in the scanner?
Typically 20 to 30 minutes for a plain study of one knee.
Q5. Does an MRI of the knee hurt?
No. Nothing touches the joint and no injection is needed for a plain scan. The only demand is staying still.
Q6. Can it detect arthritis as well as injury?
Yes. MRI picks up cartilage loss, bone marrow changes and joint inflammation, so it is useful for degenerative disease as well as acute tears.
Q7. What should I bring to the appointment?
Your prescription and any earlier knee X-rays, MRI films or surgical notes — comparison with previous imaging makes the report far more useful.
An MRI of the right knee gives a detailed view of the cartilage, ligaments and tendons in the joint. It is advised if:
