About women under 25 years checkups
Testing after 60 is about staying ahead of complications, not finding new diseases. Most of what matters here is slow, silent, and perfectly manageable if someone's watching it.
Diabetes and kidney disease travel together and neither says much. Kidneys carry a lot of spare capacity, so filtration can drop a long way before you notice, and what's lost is lost.
Gout gets much more common in this decade and gets mistaken for ordinary arthritis constantly. Different problem, different treatment. Anaemia gets written off as ageing when it's usually fixable. And heart function is worth measuring properly rather than inferring.
You're tired, weak or short of breath
You've got diabetes, high BP or heart disease
Sudden severe joint pain, especially the toe or ankle
Changes in urination, or swelling in the legs
You take several long-term medicines
Your annual review is due
This page lists 9 options. Here's what each one actually measures, so you can pick instead of guessing.
Blood tests
Diabetes Testing (FBS + PLBS): Sugar before food and two hours after. The second number is the interesting one, because that's where trouble shows up first.
Uric Acid Test: High uric acid causes gout. People often assume that sudden, furious pain in the big toe is arthritis, and treat it completely wrong.
Complete Blood Picture (CBP): Counts your red cells, white cells and platelets. It's the cheapest way to catch anaemia or an infection you didn't know you had, and it's the single most booked test we do.
HbA1c: Your average sugar over the last two to three months. One good week won't fix this number, which is the point of it.
Lipid Panel: Splits your cholesterol into the good, the bad and the triglycerides. High cholesterol has no symptoms at all, which is exactly the problem.
Renal Function Test (RFT): Kidneys can lose a big chunk of function before you notice a thing, and what's gone doesn't come back. If you're diabetic or have high BP, this isn't optional.
Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum): Your body makes this from sunlight, and most people who work indoors don't get enough. Low levels show up as aching bones, weak muscles and flat mood.
Scans
Abdominal Ultrasound: Painless look at your liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas. No radiation, and it takes about fifteen minutes.
2D Echo: An ultrasound of your heart, beating, live on screen. Shows how strongly it pumps and whether the valves are doing their job. No radiation.
No fasting: Complete Blood Picture (CBP), HbA1c, Uric Acid Test, Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum)
Nothing to do beforehand: 2D Echo
Usually 6 to 8 hours fasting. Some scans want a full bladder: Abdominal Ultrasound
8 to 12 hours fasting for the first sample: Diabetes Testing (FBS + PLBS)
9 to 12 hours fasting. Water's fine: Lipid Panel
Go easy on protein and hard exercise the day before: Renal Function Test (RFT)
Tell the collection team everything you're taking, prescription or not. Plenty of supplements move these numbers, and without that context your report reads wrong.
Every six months for sugar and kidney function if you've got either. Once a year for the rest. Your doctor may want you in more often depending on treatment.
Bring the medicine list. Several common long-term drugs move kidney and liver numbers around, and without that context the report reads wrong.
These tests point at a diagnosis. They don't make one. Read your report with a doctor who knows your history and what you're currently taking.
