About women under 25 years checkups
Diabetes and heart disease take years to build and give you nothing to go on while they do it. This is the decade they typically start.
Blood sugar can run high for years without a symptom, doing quiet damage to blood vessels, nerves and kidneys the whole time. Prediabetes, the stage before the real thing, often reverses with nothing more than diet and walking. It has no symptoms whatsoever. You find it by testing or you don't find it.
Cholesterol is the same story. Arteries narrow gradually and silently, and for a lot of men the first symptom is the heart attack. Not a warning sign. The event itself. Measuring now is what makes the years in between worth something.
You've gained weight, especially around the middle
Diabetes or heart disease runs in the family
You smoke, or drink regularly
You've got high blood pressure
You're breathless doing things you used to manage fine
You haven't had a checkup in over a year
This page lists 8 options. Here's what each one actually measures, so you can pick instead of guessing.
Blood tests
Diabetes Testing (FBS + PLBS): Sugar before food and two hours after. The second number is the interesting one, because that's where trouble shows up first.
Complete Blood Picture (CBP): Counts your red cells, white cells and platelets. It's the cheapest way to catch anaemia or an infection you didn't know you had, and it's the single most booked test we do.
Lipid Panel: Splits your cholesterol into the good, the bad and the triglycerides. High cholesterol has no symptoms at all, which is exactly the problem.
Liver Function Test (LFT): Your liver handles everything you eat, drink and swallow. It puts up with a lot before it complains, so this picks up fatty liver or alcohol strain years before you'd feel anything.
Vitamin B12 Test: Your nerves and red blood cells need B12. If you're vegetarian, you're at real risk, and the symptoms are easy to miss: tingling hands, fuzzy thinking, no energy.
Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum): Your body makes this from sunlight, and most people who work indoors don't get enough. Low levels show up as aching bones, weak muscles and flat mood.
Scans
Electrocardiogram (ECG): A few minutes lying still while it records your heart's rhythm. Quick, cheap, and the standard starting point for anything cardiac.
Abdominal Ultrasound: Painless look at your liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas. No radiation, and it takes about fifteen minutes.
No fasting: Complete Blood Picture (CBP), Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum)
Usually 6 to 8 hours fasting. Some scans want a full bladder: Abdominal Ultrasound
8 to 12 hours fasting for the first sample: Diabetes Testing (FBS + PLBS)
Nothing to do beforehand: Electrocardiogram (ECG)
9 to 12 hours fasting. Water's fine: Lipid Panel
Skip alcohol for 24 hours first: Liver Function Test (LFT)
No fasting. Ask your doctor before pausing supplements: Vitamin B12 Test
Tell the collection team everything you're taking, prescription or not. Plenty of supplements move these numbers, and without that context your report reads wrong.
Once a year. Twice if sugar, cholesterol or liver enzymes came back high, or with a family history of diabetes or heart disease.
One high sugar reading isn't a diagnosis. Your doctor will confirm with a repeat before concluding anything, so don't spiral over a single number.
These tests point at a diagnosis. They don't make one. Read your report with a doctor who knows your history and what you're currently taking.
