About women under 25 years checkups
After 60 the job changes. It's less about hunting for new disease and more about keeping a close enough eye on what's already there that it doesn't turn into something worse.
Sugar and kidneys are linked, and not gently. High blood sugar over years wrecks the filtering units in the kidney, and that damage stays. Watching both together is what keeps a manageable problem from becoming a dialysis conversation.
Bone density keeps dropping after menopause, and the first sign is usually a fracture from a fall that shouldn't have caused one. Anaemia is common at this age and gets dismissed as getting older, when it's often very treatable. And heart function is worth actually looking at rather than guessing from risk factors.
You're tired, weak, or breathless doing very little
You've got diabetes, high BP or kidney trouble
Your joints hurt, or you've had a fall
Your appetite or weight has changed
You're on several long-term medicines
Your annual review is due
This page lists 9 options. Here's what each one actually measures, so you can pick instead of guessing.
Blood tests
Diabetes Testing (FBS + PLBS): Sugar before food and two hours after. The second number is the interesting one, because that's where trouble shows up first.
Complete Blood Picture (CBP): Counts your red cells, white cells and platelets. It's the cheapest way to catch anaemia or an infection you didn't know you had, and it's the single most booked test we do.
HbA1c: Your average sugar over the last two to three months. One good week won't fix this number, which is the point of it.
Thyroid Function Tests: Checks the hormones that set how fast your body runs. Worth doing if you're tired, gaining or losing weight without trying, or your hair's thinning.
Renal Function Test (RFT): Kidneys can lose a big chunk of function before you notice a thing, and what's gone doesn't come back. If you're diabetic or have high BP, this isn't optional.
Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum): Your body makes this from sunlight, and most people who work indoors don't get enough. Low levels show up as aching bones, weak muscles and flat mood.
Calcium Profile: Calcium plus the markers that control it. Bone loss is silent until something breaks, so this is one of the few ways to see it coming.
Scans
Abdominal Ultrasound: Painless look at your liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas. No radiation, and it takes about fifteen minutes.
2D Echo: An ultrasound of your heart, beating, live on screen. Shows how strongly it pumps and whether the valves are doing their job. No radiation.
No fasting: Calcium Profile, Complete Blood Picture (CBP), HbA1c, Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum)
Nothing to do beforehand: 2D Echo
Usually 6 to 8 hours fasting. Some scans want a full bladder: Abdominal Ultrasound
8 to 12 hours fasting for the first sample: Diabetes Testing (FBS + PLBS)
Go easy on protein and hard exercise the day before: Renal Function Test (RFT)
No fasting. Take your thyroid tablet after the sample, not before: Thyroid Function Tests
Tell the collection team everything you're taking, prescription or not. Plenty of supplements move these numbers, and without that context your report reads wrong.
Every six months for sugar and kidney function if you've got either condition. Once a year for the rest, or whatever your doctor says.
Bring your medicine list to the appointment. At this age the numbers get read against what you're already taking, not just against the reference range, and your doctor can't do that without the list.
These tests point at a diagnosis. They don't make one. Read your report with a doctor who knows your history and what you're currently taking.
