About women under 25 years checkups
From 35 the point of testing changes. You're no longer just setting a baseline. You're watching for drift, while drift is still something you can argue with.
Thyroid problems, already common in women, get more common after 35. Sugar and cholesterol start creeping. Bone density begins its slow slide well before menopause shows up. You won't feel a single bit of it.
Here's what changes: a fasting sugar of 108 at 38 is a reason to walk more and eat better. The same number ignored for ten years is a diagnosis with a prescription attached. Same reading, completely different conversation. This is the window where small corrections still work.
You're tired, low, or your weight has changed without explanation
Your periods have gone irregular or heavier
Diabetes, thyroid or heart disease runs in the family
You've gained weight around the middle
You've got high BP, or you had gestational diabetes
It's simply been a year
This page lists 8 options. Here's what each one actually measures, so you can pick instead of guessing.
Blood tests
Random Blood Sugar Test: A sugar reading whenever you happen to be free. Not as precise as a fasting test, but you don't have to plan your day around it.
Complete Blood Picture (CBP): Counts your red cells, white cells and platelets. It's the cheapest way to catch anaemia or an infection you didn't know you had, and it's the single most booked test we do.
Lipid Panel: Splits your cholesterol into the good, the bad and the triglycerides. High cholesterol has no symptoms at all, which is exactly the problem.
Thyroid Function Tests: Checks the hormones that set how fast your body runs. Worth doing if you're tired, gaining or losing weight without trying, or your hair's thinning.
Vitamin B12 Test: Your nerves and red blood cells need B12. If you're vegetarian, you're at real risk, and the symptoms are easy to miss: tingling hands, fuzzy thinking, no energy.
Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum): Your body makes this from sunlight, and most people who work indoors don't get enough. Low levels show up as aching bones, weak muscles and flat mood.
Scans
Electrocardiogram (ECG): A few minutes lying still while it records your heart's rhythm. Quick, cheap, and the standard starting point for anything cardiac.
Abdominal Ultrasound: Painless look at your liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas. No radiation, and it takes about fifteen minutes.
No fasting: Complete Blood Picture (CBP), Random Blood Sugar Test, Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum)
Usually 6 to 8 hours fasting. Some scans want a full bladder: Abdominal Ultrasound
Nothing to do beforehand: Electrocardiogram (ECG)
9 to 12 hours fasting. Water's fine: Lipid Panel
No fasting. Take your thyroid tablet after the sample, not before: Thyroid Function Tests
No fasting. Ask your doctor before pausing supplements: Vitamin B12 Test
Tell the collection team everything you're taking, prescription or not. Plenty of supplements move these numbers, and without that context your report reads wrong.
Once a year. Twice for sugar and cholesterol if either has been high before, or if diabetes or heart disease runs in the family.
Thyroid results in particular get read alongside how you actually feel, not on their own. A borderline number usually gets repeated a few weeks later before anyone starts treatment.
These tests point at a diagnosis. They don't make one. Read your report with a doctor who knows your history and what you're currently taking.
