About women under 25 years checkups
Menopause changes your bone and heart risk, and does it completely silently. Testing through these years is about watching those two shifts rather than waiting for them to introduce themselves.
Oestrogen drops, bone loss speeds up, heart risk moves upward. You feel none of it. Bone loss stays invisible until something breaks, usually from a fall that shouldn't have broken anything.
Thyroid disorders also peak in this age group, and this is the annoying part: the symptoms are nearly identical to menopause. Tired, heavier, low mood, sleeping badly, can't concentrate. A blood test is the only thing that separates them, and it's worth doing before writing everything off as menopause. They're managed very differently.
Your periods have gone irregular or stopped
Hot flushes, broken sleep, mood swings
You're tired all the time or the weight won't shift
Your joints or bones ache
Osteoporosis or heart disease runs in the family
Breast screening is due
This page lists 9 options. Here's what each one actually measures, so you can pick instead of guessing.
Blood tests
TSH Test: Just the brain's signal to the thyroid. It moves before anything else does, so it's the cheaper first look if you only want one number.
Complete Blood Picture (CBP): Counts your red cells, white cells and platelets. It's the cheapest way to catch anaemia or an infection you didn't know you had, and it's the single most booked test we do.
CRP test: Tells you there's inflammation somewhere. It won't tell you where, but it answers whether something's actually going on.
Lipid Panel: Splits your cholesterol into the good, the bad and the triglycerides. High cholesterol has no symptoms at all, which is exactly the problem.
Thyroid Function Tests: Checks the hormones that set how fast your body runs. Worth doing if you're tired, gaining or losing weight without trying, or your hair's thinning.
Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum): Your body makes this from sunlight, and most people who work indoors don't get enough. Low levels show up as aching bones, weak muscles and flat mood.
Calcium Profile: Calcium plus the markers that control it. Bone loss is silent until something breaks, so this is one of the few ways to see it coming.
Scans
Abdominal Ultrasound: Painless look at your liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas. No radiation, and it takes about fifteen minutes.
Mammogram: Breast screening that finds changes far too small to feel. Mildly uncomfortable for about ten seconds.
No fasting: CRP test, Calcium Profile, Complete Blood Picture (CBP), TSH Test, Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum)
Usually 6 to 8 hours fasting. Some scans want a full bladder: Abdominal Ultrasound
9 to 12 hours fasting. Water's fine: Lipid Panel
No deodorant, powder or talc that morning: Mammogram
No fasting. Take your thyroid tablet after the sample, not before: Thyroid Function Tests
Tell the collection team everything you're taking, prescription or not. Plenty of supplements move these numbers, and without that context your report reads wrong.
Once a year for the bloodwork. For breast screening, follow what your doctor advises based on your age and family history.
If thyroid comes back normal and you still feel awful, that's genuinely useful. It points your doctor at the menopausal transition instead of leaving both doors open.
These tests point at a diagnosis. They don't make one. Read your report with a doctor who knows your history and what you're currently taking.
