About women under 25 years checkups
Nothing dramatic happens to most men in this decade. That's exactly why it's worth measuring. What builds up now still reverses. Leave it another ten years and often it doesn't.
Desk job, irregular meals, a few drinks a week, not much sleep. None of it feels like a health problem. It turns up in liver enzymes and cholesterol first. Fatty liver in particular is everywhere in this age group, causes zero symptoms, and clears up with weight loss and less alcohol as long as you catch it before scarring starts.
Blood sugar behaves the same way. It can sit high for years without a single symptom. HbA1c is the number worth knowing here, because it covers three months and can't be gamed by eating well for two days before the test.
You sit at a desk most of the day
You drink regularly
Diabetes or heart disease runs in the family
You've put on weight around the middle
You're tired despite sleeping enough
You haven't had bloodwork in over a year
This page lists 7 options. Here's what each one actually measures, so you can pick instead of guessing.
Blood tests
Complete Blood Picture (CBP): Counts your red cells, white cells and platelets. It's the cheapest way to catch anaemia or an infection you didn't know you had, and it's the single most booked test we do.
HbA1c: Your average sugar over the last two to three months. One good week won't fix this number, which is the point of it.
Lipid Panel: Splits your cholesterol into the good, the bad and the triglycerides. High cholesterol has no symptoms at all, which is exactly the problem.
Liver Function Test (LFT): Your liver handles everything you eat, drink and swallow. It puts up with a lot before it complains, so this picks up fatty liver or alcohol strain years before you'd feel anything.
Vitamin B12 Test: Your nerves and red blood cells need B12. If you're vegetarian, you're at real risk, and the symptoms are easy to miss: tingling hands, fuzzy thinking, no energy.
Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum): Your body makes this from sunlight, and most people who work indoors don't get enough. Low levels show up as aching bones, weak muscles and flat mood.
Scans
Abdominal Ultrasound: Painless look at your liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas. No radiation, and it takes about fifteen minutes.
No fasting: Complete Blood Picture (CBP), HbA1c, Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum)
Usually 6 to 8 hours fasting. Some scans want a full bladder: Abdominal Ultrasound
9 to 12 hours fasting. Water's fine: Lipid Panel
Skip alcohol for 24 hours first: Liver Function Test (LFT)
No fasting. Ask your doctor before pausing supplements: Vitamin B12 Test
Tell the collection team everything you're taking, prescription or not. Plenty of supplements move these numbers, and without that context your report reads wrong.
Once a year. Twice if cholesterol, sugar or liver enzymes came back high, or if diabetes runs in your family.
Cholesterol at this age owes as much to genetics as to diet, so a high LDL in someone slim and active isn't a contradiction. Your doctor reads it against everything else, not on its own.
These tests point at a diagnosis. They don't make one. Read your report with a doctor who knows your history and what you're currently taking.
