About women under 25 years checkups
This is the decade where hormones become the reason most women test. Irregular cycles, trouble conceiving, PCOS symptoms. They look similar from the outside and they aren't the same thing.
A thyroid problem can throw your cycle off entirely. So can high prolactin, through a completely different route, and prolactin gets missed constantly because it isn't in the standard panel anyone books. Meanwhile iron keeps draining, first through periods, then further through pregnancy if that happens.
Each one needs a different fix. The catch is timing: several of these hormones swing across the month, so a sample on the wrong day can come back looking perfectly fine while the actual problem sits there unspotted. Book the day your doctor tells you, not the day that suits your calendar.
Your cycles are irregular, missing, or unusually heavy
You've been trying to conceive without luck
You've got acne, weight gain or excess hair growth
You're planning a pregnancy in the next year or so
You're pregnant and routine screening is due
You're tired and low and can't pin down why
This page lists 8 options. Here's what each one actually measures, so you can pick instead of guessing.
Blood tests
Complete Blood Picture (CBP): Counts your red cells, white cells and platelets. It's the cheapest way to catch anaemia or an infection you didn't know you had, and it's the single most booked test we do.
Prolactin Test: High prolactin quietly stops ovulation. It's a common reason periods go irregular and it's easy to treat, but it isn't in a standard panel so it gets missed a lot.
Thyroid Function Tests: Checks the hormones that set how fast your body runs. Worth doing if you're tired, gaining or losing weight without trying, or your hair's thinning.
Beta hCG Test: The pregnancy hormone. It confirms things earlier than a home kit and helps date the pregnancy.
Ferritin Test: This is your iron savings account, and it empties before your blood count changes. That's why you can feel exhausted while a routine CBP looks perfectly fine.
Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum): Your body makes this from sunlight, and most people who work indoors don't get enough. Low levels show up as aching bones, weak muscles and flat mood.
Scans
Abdominal Ultrasound: Painless look at your liver, gallbladder, kidneys and pancreas. No radiation, and it takes about fifteen minutes.
Anomaly Scan: The detailed mid-pregnancy scan that checks your baby's organs and growth in full.
No fasting: Beta hCG Test, Complete Blood Picture (CBP), Vitamin D (25 - Hydroxy Vitamin D, Serum)
Usually 6 to 8 hours fasting. Some scans want a full bladder: Abdominal Ultrasound
Booked between 18 and 22 weeks: Anomaly Scan
Morning sample is better: Ferritin Test
Morning, after sitting quietly for a bit. Stress pushes it up: Prolactin Test
No fasting. Take your thyroid tablet after the sample, not before: Thyroid Function Tests
Tell the collection team everything you're taking, prescription or not. Plenty of supplements move these numbers, and without that context your report reads wrong.
Annually for the general stuff. Hormones follow your cycle rather than the calendar, usually day two or three for the baseline ones. Your doctor will tell you the day.
Hormone numbers only make sense next to your cycle day, your symptoms, and often a scan. No single value diagnoses PCOS or infertility, whatever the internet says. Bring the whole picture.
These tests point at a diagnosis. They don't make one. Read your report with a doctor who knows your history and what you're currently taking.
